The manufacture of a tradicional textile is made along a long process carried out by a craftswoman at her home and that can be subdivided in the next stages:

Lavado de la Lana/ Washing of the wool

Se lava prolijamente con agua caliente, extrayendo todos los restos orgánicos que se van acumulando a través de la vida de la oveja. Luego se lava con agua fría.

The wool is washed with prolixity and hot water, taking out all the organic rests that stick to it along the sheep’s life. Then it is rinsed with cold water.

Escarmentado de la lana/ Comb of the wool

Este trabajo consiste en estirar los fragmentos de lana esquilada, separando a mano cuidadosamente las fibras sin que se corten hasta que adquieran una textura suave y un peso muy liviano.

This job consists in stretching the fragments of shear wool, carefully separating by hand the fibers without cutting them until they acquire a soft texture and a very Light weight.

Hilado de la lana/ spinning wool

Éste se realiza ya sea con un huso, instrumento tradicional mapuche o una rueca, máquina artesanal y consiste en torcer las fibras de lana escarmentada hasta obtener un hilo del grosor deseado.

This is done either with a spindle, a tradicional Mapuche instrument or a rueca, a craft machine, and consists on twisting the fibers of combed wool until obtaining a thread of the desire thickness.

Teñido de la lana/ Dyeing of wool

Se selecciona el producto vegetal del que se desea obtener el color, el cual se hierve en agua hasta lograr que desprenda el color. Se agrega la lana mojada enmadejada, y finalmente, después de un período de cocción, se agrega una sustancia que fije el color.

The vegetal product from which it is wished to obtain the color to dye the wool is selected, and then boiled in water until the color is released. The wet hank of wool is added and, finally, after a boiling period, a substance that fixes the color is added.

Tejido de la lana/ Weave of the wool

Cuando la lana teñida ya está seca y el telar se ha preparado según las medidas de la prenda que se elaborará, se inicia el tejido urdiendo la lana en el huitral, savu o telar y se entrelazan las hebras y da origen a un producto único.

Once the dyed wool is dry and the handloom is set according to the measures of the piece which will be made, the weaving of the wool begins in the huitral, savu or handlomm, where the threads are entwined, giving birth to a unique product.

Colores / Colors

La naturaleza nos brinda un sinfín de opciones para realizar el proceso de teñido. Escondidos en la corteza, raíces, hojas y también en algunas flores, se encuentran los colores que, luego de ser hervidos penetran la lana y logran un colorido único e irrepetible.

Nature provides us an infinity of options to carry out the dyeing process. Hidden in the crust, roots, sheets and in some flowers, are the colors, which after being boiled, impregnate the wool achieving and unique and unrepeatable color.
